Catalyst Fund

The Catalyst Fund brings people who care about Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington together to experience philanthropy first-hand. With a modest donation of $250, members (individuals and couples) pool their resources to:

• Learn about topical issues facing our communities  
• Jointly determine grants to nonprofit organizations tackling those issues
• Meet new people who share a commitment to our communities.

The Foundation convenes three stimulating sessions annually for Catalyst Fund participants focused on a selected topic. Topics change from year-to-year, according to participants’ interests. The first session features background presentations on a timely issue and allows members a chance to fine-tune their focus. The second meeting concentrates on the focus area, creating an understanding of the issues involved and those working in the focus area. At the last meeting, members review grant proposals and the group votes on the grant for the current year.

Community foundations across the country have created such funds to encourage broader participation in the philanthropic process. Participants enjoy the educational, social and interactive nature of this “giving circle” and many continue to be involved for years.
