Stanek Scholarship Offered to Southington High School Students

Applications Begin January 25; Two Additional Foundation Scholarships Also Available to Southington Residents

(January 17, 2008) Commitment to community was a hallmark of Dennis Stanek, Sr.’s life. The Southington resident and community icon, who passed away at age 63 in 2005, would be proud to know that his legacy has been preserved by his family and friends through establishment of the Dennis J. Stanek, Sr., Memorial Scholarship at the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, applications for which will be available to Southington High School students beginning January 25.

The scholarship offers two annual awards to graduating seniors of Southington High School who participate in varsity athletics and/or have a significant record of community service. Applicants must be planning to attend the University of Connecticut, Stanek’s alma mater.

Southington High School students interested in applying for the Stanek Scholarship must complete Southington High School’s common scholarship application, available to all seniors from the high school guidance office. Applications will be available beginning Friday, January 25, through Thursday, February 14, and must be completed and returned to the guidance office by 2 p.m. on Friday, February 15.

Two additional Foundation scholarships are also available to Southington residents who attend Southington High School or other schools. The Eleanor and Nathan Berry Scholarship is a four-year award offered to graduating seniors planning to pursue careers in health or finance. The Dick Burkarth/Shuttle Meadow Country Club Scholarship is a one-year award available to seniors interested in pursuing careers in professional golf, including golf course design and/or construction and golf course management. Both of these scholarships are also available to residents of Berlin, Farmington, New Britain, Newington and Plainville.

Graduating seniors of Southington High School or other schools interested in the Berry or Burkharth/Shuttle Meadow Scholarships may download applications on the Community Foundation’s website at www.cfgnb.org. Applications are also available through school guidance offices. The application deadline for the Berry and Burkharth/Shuttle Meadow Scholarships is March 31.

All students are advised to seek the advice of their high school guidance counselors regarding availability and eligibility for these and many additional scholarships.
