Community Foundation Earns National Recognition

Among First in Nation to Achieve National Standards Certification

Companies, organizations and institutions of every nature with obligations to the publics they serve are under increasing scrutiny every day to ensure that their missions are fulfilled legally and ethically. That is no different for the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, which for 65 years has safeguarded the public’s investment in the communities it serves.

That track record of above-board operations and prudent financial management has been rewarded. The Community Foundation has been cited by the Council on Foundations – the national membership association of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations and corporations – as one of the first 100 of more than 650 community foundations nationwide to meet the new National Standards for United States Community Foundations.

“This, in effect, is our industry’s Good Housekeeping seal of approval,” said Foundation President Jim Williamson. “Meeting this standard and being cited for doing so by our industry’s signature membership association says to any and all who work or invest with the Community Foundation that we are responsible, accountable and doing our job.

“We are thrilled with this important, national acknowledgment of our good work.”

The Council on Foundations and leaders of the community foundation field created the National Standards to aid community foundations in establishing legal, ethical and effective operational practices that would show the foundations’ transparency and financial responsibility. Foundations in compliance with the standards may use a National Standards seal in all materials, signifying to prospective donors and financial advisors the organization’s integrity and demonstrated excellence. This year is the first year such certifications are being awarded.

Established in 1941, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain connects donors who care with causes that matter in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. The Foundation manages more than 130 funds with a market value of more than $30 million, and distributes approximately $1 million annually in community grants.
