Catalyst Fund Membership Slates First Meeting of 2006
May 23 Event Features Nutrition Expert; Citizens Interested in Community Service Invited to Learn More
An authority on nutrition education and program planning will be the featured speaker at the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s first Catalyst Fund meeting of 2006, to take place Tuesday, May 23 at the Plainville Public Library.
Members of the public interested in becoming actively involved in meaningful and rewarding charitable giving are invited to attend this no-cost event. The meeting takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served. RSVP (860) 229-6018, ext. 300.
Sharon Mierzwa, M.P.H., R.D., Education Resource Associate with the Connecticut Association of Directors of Health, current president of the Connecticut Dietetic Association and a past chairperson of the Connecticut Nutrition Council, will speak before the group. Ms. Mierzwa has 25 years of experience in public health and currently coordinates education and training programs for local health districts and departments statewide.
“Sharon’s expertise is an ideal match for the Catalyst Fund membership’s 2006 charitable focus on nutrition,” said Cheryl Farmer, donor relations manager for the Community Foundation. “We are looking forward to an enlightening evening as our membership seeks to more clearly define its charitable goals for the year.”
The Catalyst Fund, created in 2003 with the support of the Robert C. Vance Foundation, is a grass roots community service initiative that provides a means by which citizens from all walks of life can participate in the philanthropic process. For a modest annual investment of $250, Catalyst Fund members annually select a charitable focus, convene educational sessions to learn about their issue and, at the end of each year, choose a nonprofit recipient specializing in the issue of choice to receive a grant.
This year’s chosen focus of nutrition will be more narrowly defined with the benefit of the insight and discussion at the May 23 meeting. At a second meeting in September, more in-depth education about the chosen focus will take place. The membership will vote on applicants for a $10,000 grant award at the final meeting in November.
