Scholarship Applications Available Now

Area High School Students Encouraged to Apply
Application deadlines are fast approaching for a variety of Community Foundation of Greater New Britain college scholarships available to students in the Foundation's four-town service area of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington, as well as select scholarships also available to students in Farmington, Newington and Wethersfield.

Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are available to students who are residents of the indicated town or towns. Application deadline is March 30, 2007, except in the case of the Dennis J. Stanek, Sr., Memorial Scholarship (March 9 – see below) and the Louis P. Gianoli Memorial Scholarship (March 15 – see below). Available scholarships are listed by town of residence and/or high school attended.

Berlin, Farmington, New Britain, Newington, Plainville and Southington:

  • Eleanor and Nathan Berry Scholarship. A four-year award offered to graduating seniors planning to pursue careers in health or finance. Deadline: March 30
  • Dick Burkarth/Shuttle Meadow Country Club Scholarship. A one-year award available to seniors interested in pursuing careers in professional golf, including golf course design and/or construction and golf course management. Deadline: March 30.

Berlin and New Britain:

  • Helen T. Bianca Nursing Scholarship. A one-year award for graduating seniors possessing qualities of good character, financial need and community volunteerism and who are pursuing nursing degrees. Deadline: March 30
  • William P. McCormack Scholarship. Applicants must be in the top 20 percent of their class and possess qualities of good character, financial need and community volunteerism. Deadline: March 30.

Farmington, New Britain and Plainville:

  • Macdonald/Hjerpe Scholarship. A four-year award available to graduating seniors planning to pursue careers in the sciences, education or human services. Deadline: March 30.

New Britain, Newington and Wethersfield:

  • Elizabeth I. and Louis J. Matt Scholarship. A one-year award available to graduating seniors or those who previously graduated from a public high school in one of these three towns who wish to pursue a medical vocation, broadly defined. Deadline: March 30.

New Britain High School or E.C. Goodwin Technical High School Students:

  • Louis P. Gianoli Memorial Scholarship. Applicants must be graduating seniors of one of these schools and be pursuing two- or four-year degrees at an accredited college or university, or advanced education in pursuit of a trade or technical career. Deadline: March 15.

Plainville:

• William G. Bryant Memorial Scholarship. Two one-year awards available to graduating seniors pursuing two- or four-year degrees at an accredited college or university, or advanced education in pursuit of a trade or technical career. Preference is given to candidates planning careers in engineering, construction and/or real estate development. Deadline: March 30.

Southington:

• Dennis J. Stanek, Sr., Memorial Scholarship. Two awards to graduating seniors of Southington High School who participate in varsity athletics and/or who have significant community service involvement and will attend the University of Connecticut. Deadline: March 9.

Applications for all of the above scholarships are available on the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain website at http://www.cfgnb.org/ and at the high school guidance offices in the indicated towns. All students are advised to seek the advice of their high school guidance counselors regarding availability and eligibility for these and many additional scholarships.
