Local Community Foundations Partner to Present Educational Seminars
Charitable giving and community-oriented philanthropy are among the keys to strong, vibrant and healthy communities. Understanding donor motivation and the changing dynamics of our society are critical to ensuring that future generations continue to invest in their communities.
These issues and more will be explored by Paul G. Schervish, Ph.D., one of the nation’s preeminent researchers on donor behavior and trends in philanthropy, in a pair of seminars hosted jointly by the Main Street Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, November 6 and 7.
On Monday the 6th, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Schervish will make a presentation geared toward financial advisors, attorneys and trust officers entitled “Wealth, Philanthropy and Financial Advisement: A Guide for the 21st Century.” On Tuesday, the 7th, from 8-10 a.m., a seminar entitled “Clarifying Donor Aspirations for Charitable Giving: A Guide for the 21st Century” will be presented for donors, nonprofits and community leaders. Each presentation will examine the upcoming entrepreneurial generation of donors and how the future transfer of wealth may open a floodgate of philanthropy over the next several decades.
Schervish is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College. Appointed a Fulbright Scholar for the 2000-2001 academic year at University College Cork in the area of research on philanthropy, Schervish was recently named for the third straight year to the NonProfit Times’ annual "Power and Influence Top 50," a list acknowledging movers and shakers in the non-profit world, joining such notable figures as Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, AOL Time Warner Foundation Executive Director David Eisner, and Millard Fuller, Founder and President of Habitat for Humanity International.
Lead sponsor for the two events is Farmington Savings Bank. Additional corporate support is being provided by Bank of America Philanthropic Management, Blum Shapiro, The Joe & Kay Calvanese Foundation, Citizens Investment Management Services and SEI Investments.
