Pair of New Britain High School Graduates Earn Community Foundation Scholarships

Ronald F. Gilrain Scholarships Awarded to Students Attending CCSU

(September 12, 2008) Two graduates of New Britain High School (NBHS) and current students at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) have been awarded the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s Ronald F. Gilrain Scholarship.

The students are Ramatou Sangare, a 2006 NBHS graduate now in her third year at CCSU, and Thomas E. Buckley, who graduated from NBHS in June and began his first semester at Central this month. Sangare is studying communications, with a concentration in public relations/promotions and a minor in journalism. Buckley has yet to declare a major area of study.

The Ronald F. Gilrain Scholarship provides financial assistance to New Britain High School graduates who have successfully completed the summer Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at CSCU, designed for students who have the potential to successfully perform at the college level, but who do not meet regular admission standards. Sangare completed CCSU’s EOP in 2006, while Buckley completed the program prior to his enrollment this semester.

The scholarship honors the memory of the Community Foundation’s former board chair, a long-time executive with The Stanley Works who passed away in May. Mr. Gilrain established the scholarship fund to help young people overcome cultural barriers and to provide the additional support they need to succeed in life.

The Community Foundation has 31 named scholarship funds and annually awards more than $75,000 in scholarship grants to students from Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Southington and beyond, helping them to pursue higher education in a variety of fields ranging from education to biology to nursing to business.
