Area Students Awarded More Than $74,000 in Scholarships by Community Foundation of Greater New Britain

(July 17, 2008) The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has awarded a total of $74,296 in scholarships to 32 students from Berlin, Farmington, New Britain, Plainville, Southington and other towns, helping them to pursue higher education in a variety of fields ranging from education to biology to nursing to business.

The students received scholarship awards from 26 of the Foundation’s 31 named scholarship funds and plan to attend colleges and universities both locally and nationally, including Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), the University of Connecticut (UConn), Bryant University, Penn State, Holy Cross and more. A total of 36 scholarships were awarded, with four students each receiving two scholarships.

Scholarship recipients are listed in alphabetical order by town of residence. Listings include student name, scholarship awarded, college/university and chosen field of study. Unless otherwise noted, all students are recent graduates of Berlin High School, New Britain High School, Plainville High School or Southington High School.

Berlin

In addition to the above-named students, Jessica Grogan of Orchard Park, N.Y., was awarded the Kim Miller Synchronized Swimming Scholarship (she will attend Canisius College, Economics and Finance), and Elyse Van Wyngaarden of Ivoryton was awarded the Allen M. and Rosalind W. Humes Humanitarian Scholarship (she will attend CCSU, Education).
