Five Residents Nominated for Celebrate Berlin! Award

Five residents of Berlin have been nominated as candidates for the Celebrate Berlin! award, part of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s four-town Celebrate Our Communities! community service awards program in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.

The recipient of the 2007 award, which honors an outstanding grassroots volunteer in Berlin, will earn the right to designate a $2,500 grant award from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain to a Berlin charity or community service organization of their choice. The recipient will be announced this spring. This year’s nominees are:

  • Susan Brochu, a volunteer with Berlin Girl Scouts and catechist with Sacred Heart Church in East Berlin (nominated by Mary Ellen Molski).
  • Don Dellaquila, a volunteer youth sports coach (nominated by Roger Perno);
  • Helen deRito, a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Berlin and president of the Hubbard School PTO (nominated by Karen Pagliaro).
  • Deborah Muzio, a cheerleading coach with the Berlin Midget Football League and McGee


Middle School (nominated by Joanne Heckman).

  • John Tedesco, a volunteer with the Berlin Upbeat Program (nominated by Alice Mitchell).

Chairing the selection committee for the 2007 award are Mayor Adam Salina and Tom Veronesi, retired assistant principal of Willard School, former mayor and currently a member of the Town’s Economic Development Commission. Other members of the committee are: Joe Aresimowicz; Kate Fuechsel, Director, Berlin Chamber of Commerce; Manon-Lu Christ, Kensington resident and member of the Community Foundation board of directors; Donna Lasher, Kensington resident and board chair, Community Foundation; Robert Mayer, Managing Editor, Berlin Citizen; and Rose Angeli Wollman.
