Ten Community Servants Nominated for Celebrate Plainville! Award
(March 10, 2008) A total of 10 individuals have been nominated as candidates for the Celebrate Plainville! Award, part of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s four-town Celebrate Our Communities! community service awards program in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.
The recipient of the 2008 award, which honors an outstanding grassroots volunteer in Plainville, will earn the right to designate a $2,500 grant award from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain to a Plainville charity or community service organization of their choice. The recipient will be announced in late March. This year’s nominees are:
• Bill Calder, a Plainville resident and General Electric employee who has volunteered for more than 10 years with the Plainville Community Schools Volunteer Program (nominated by Gina Broadbent).
• James Cassidy, a Plainville resident and cycling enthusiast who is a founding member of the Plainville Greenway Alliance, which advocates for a livable community through alternative transportation (nominated by Kathleen Cole).
• Janice Demarest, a lifelong Plainville resident and longtime community volunteer with the Girl Scouts, PTO committees and the Plainville Community Schools Volunteer Program (nominated by Suzanne Schweitzer).
• Matt Gingras, a Plainville resident and tireless volunteer for Plainville High School sports teams (nominated by Frank Robinson, Sr.).
• Ruth Hummel, the longtime Plainville resident and president of the Plainville Historical Society (nominated by Charles Leach and Norman Stitham).
• Gerard Reno Levesque, a Plainville resident and president of the Special Swim Club at the Plainville YMCA, which assists the physically disabled with social, physical and recreational development (nominated by Norman Bligh).
• John Potter, a Plainville resident who has volunteered for many years with Plainville youth soccer and Boy Scouts (nominated by Sherry Cole).
• Deb Tom, a Plainville resident who serves the community through her work with the Plainville Community Food Pantry, Plainville Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Plainville Community Schools and more (nominated by Susie Woerz).
• Sue Varano, a Plainville resident who for more than 15 years has served organizations including the Linden Street School PTO, Plainville Cub and Boy Scouts and Plainville Athletic Backers (nominated by Cliff and Margaret Czellecz).
• Carmen Zalewski, a Plainville resident who volunteers for the Toffolon School (nominated by Karen Clarke).
Chairing the 2008 Celebrate Plainville! Award Selection Committee is Signe Guzzo, Corporate Secretary/Treasurer, Ideal Machinery & Supply Co. Templeman Co.
