Eight Residents Nominated for Celebrate New Britain! Award

(April 5, 2007) Eight residents of New Britain have been nominated as candidates for the Celebrate New Britain! award, part of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s four-town Celebrate Our Communities! community service awards program in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.

The recipient of the 2007 award, which honors an outstanding grassroots volunteer in New Britain, will earn the right to designate a $2,500 grant award from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain to a New Britain charity or community service organization of their choice, subject to the approval of the Foundation’s board of directors. The recipient will be announced in May. This year’s nominees are:

• Frank Bradley. Frank is a long-time volunteer in New Britain who does work for a wide variety of organizations in the city. Frank is currently involved with the Warm the Children Fund, Trinity-On-Main and the New Britain Public Library, and has worked for or served on the board of directors for organizations including the Repertory Theater of New Britain, Hole in the Wall Theater and the Greater New Britain Arts Alliance, among others. • Norma Cachillo. Norma is a member of St. Jerome Church and has worked tirelessly for the church for 50 years. Norma and her church group have taken up the cause of breast cancer awareness, raising funds and decorating trees throughout Walnut Hill Park with pink ribbons for the past 10 years for the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative’s annual Race in the Park, among other good deeds. • Paulette Fox. For the past 10 years, Paulette has been a leader in helping the New Britain Museum of American Art reach out to an ever-more-diverse community. She has served on the museum’s board of trustees and developed and chaired its African Advisory Committee. She started the museum’s Juneteenth celebration and is an active and enthusiastic supporter of all of the museum’s programming. (Nominated by Maura O’Shea.)

• Judy Greco. After retiring as a teacher in 1995 following a 32-year career, Judy took up community service full time. She is president of the Boys & Girls Club of New Britain, and is also a board member of or volunteers for the Kiwanis Club, YWCA, Salvation Army, Central Connecticut Association for Retarded Citizens, Brittany Farms and the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative. • Ted and Nancy Howe. The Howes, who were nominated as a couple, have been active supporters of many New Britain-based causes for years. The many programs and organizations that the Howes have lent their time and support to include Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy’s Pathways/Senderos Center, which the Howes were instrumental in founding; First Church of Christ; Prudence Crandall Center; and SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). The Ted and Nancy Howe Fund at the Community Foundation ensures that the Howe’s community work will continue in perpetuity. (Nominated by RoseAnne Bilodeau.)

• James Jones. James is involved in a number of community programs that help New Britain families and children. As a United Way of New Britain and Berlin board member, he has coordinated outreach to educate families about the Earned Income Tax Credit, and participates in the New Britain Asset Building Coalition. He is also a volunteer basketball coach at the Boys & Girls Club. (Nominated by Mike Gorzoch.)

• Linda Karalus. Linda is the founder of the Animal Alliance Welfare League in New Britain, which works throughout the city to care for and find homes for hundreds of homeless and abused animals. (Nominated by Brenda Stawski.)

• Marilyn Slate. Marilyn is the president of New Britain Area Seniors, a group that brings seniors together for the purpose of working on public policy issues and solving community problems. Among the issues the group has tackled in recent years are healthcare, prescription drugs and housing. (Nominated by Leonard Nelson.)

The Community Foundation has earmarked a total of $10,000 in grant awards for the program in its four communities. The Herald of New Britain is a co-sponsor of the Celebrate New Britain! award.
