Noted Authorities on Hunger, Food Security
To Address Foundation’s Catalyst Fund Members

Meeting This Monday, September 24, Sets Stage for $10,000 Grant

(September 19, 2007) Two noted Connecticut authorities on the issues of hunger and food security will address a gathering of more than 50 members of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s Catalyst Fund this Monday evening, September 24, setting the stage for the Fund’s annual $10,000 grant to a worthy cause.

Monday’s meeting, sponsored by Kostin, Ruffkess & Company, LLC of Farmington,  takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at The Orchards at Southington, 34 Hobart Street, Southington, Conn. The meeting is open to Catalyst Fund members and members of the media, only. Members of the general public interested in Catalyst Fund membership may call (860) 229-6018 for more information.

Addressing the group will be Gloria McAdam, president and chief executive officer of Foodshare, and Lucy Nolan, executive director of End Hunger Connecticut! Foodshare, the regional food bank for Hartford and Tolland Counties, distributed 9.2 million pounds of donated food to some 375 local groups and organizations feeding hungry people last year alone. End Hunger Connecticut! promotes funding for and access to nutrition assistance programs throughout the state.

The Catalyst Fund, created in 2003 with the support of the Robert C. Vance Foundation, is a grass roots community service initiative that provides a means by which citizens from all walks of life can participate in the philanthropic process. For a modest annual investment of $250, Catalyst Fund members annually select a charitable focus, convene educational sessions to learn about their issue and, at the end of each year, choose a nonprofit recipient specializing in the issue of choice to receive a grant.

Catalyst Fund members have chosen to focus their 2007 efforts on the issue of hunger and food security. The membership will use the insight gained during Monday’s meeting to guide their vote on applicants for a $10,000 grant award, which will take place at the final meeting in November.
