Catalyst Fund Offers Opportunity for Community Service

Literacy, Parenting, Services for Seniors and Food Security
Among Topics of Discussion at May 24 Foundation Event

(May 16, 2007) A lively discussion about community needs in the areas of literacy, parenting, services for seniors and food security is expected on Thursday evening, May 24, as the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain holds its first Catalyst Fund meeting of the year at Mooreland Hill School, 166 Lincoln Road, Kensington.

Members of the public interested in becoming actively involved in meaningful and rewarding charitable giving are invited to attend this no-cost event. The meeting takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium; a light supper and refreshments will be served. RSVP (860) 229-6018, ext. 300.

Speakers at this roundtable event will include Candice Brown, director of the New Britain Public Library who will speak about literacy; Molly Rees Gavin, president of Connecticut Community Care, Inc., who will speak about the needs of seniors; Sandra Godin of the Parent and Child Center at Bristol Hospital, who will speak about parenting; and Susie Woerz, director of the Plainville Community Food Pantry, who will speak about food security.

The Catalyst Fund, created in 2003 with the support of the Robert C. Vance Foundation, is a grass roots community service initiative that provides a means by which citizens from all walks of life can participate in the philanthropic process. For a modest annual investment of $250, Catalyst Fund members annually select a charitable focus, convene educational sessions to learn about their issue and, at the end of each year, choose a nonprofit recipient specializing in the issue of choice to receive a grant.

Catalyst Fund members will more narrowly define their charitable focus for 2007 following next Thursday’s discussions. At a second meeting in September, more in-depth education about the chosen focus will take place. The membership will vote on applicants for a $10,000 grant award at the final meeting in November.
