CCSU Educators to Discuss Challenges to Literacy

September 23 Catalyst Fund Meeting at Plainville Public Library is Precursor to $10,000 Grant

(September 9, 2008) A pair of Central Connecticut State University educators and authorities in the field of literacy will address members of the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s Catalyst Fund on Tuesday, September 23, at the Plainville Public Library, setting the stage for the membership’s annual $10,000 grant to a nonprofit organization.

Addressing the group will be Dr. Helen Abadiano, professor and chair of the Department of Reading and Language Arts, School of Education and Professional Studies at CCSU; and Dr. Jesse Turner, Director of CCSU’s Literacy Center. Dr. Abadiano is the 2007-2008 recipient of the International Reading Association and Connecticut Reading Association award for exemplary service in the promotion of literacy, and specializes in literacy instruction in multicultural and/or urban settings and children’s literature. Dr. Turner teaches advanced graduate courses for literacy specialists, leads CCSU’s advance clinical faculty team in the Department of Reading and Language Arts and co-hosts the Central Educator cable access television program highlighting CCSU faculty, research and community service.

The Catalyst Fund, created in 2003 with the support of the Robert C. Vance Foundation, is a grass roots community service initiative that provides a means by which citizens from all walks of life can participate in philanthropy. For a modest annual investment of $250, Catalyst Fund members annually select a charitable focus, convene educational sessions to learn about their issue and, at the end of each year, choose a nonprofit recipient specializing in the issue of choice to receive a grant.

Catalyst Fund members have chosen to focus their 2008 efforts on the issue of literacy. The membership will use the insight gained during the September 23 meeting to guide their vote on applicants for a $10,000 grant award, which will take place at the final meeting in November.

The presentation, sponsored by Insurance Associates, Inc., will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Plainville Public Library is located at 56 East Main Street, Plainville. The event is open to Catalyst Fund members and members of the media, only. Members of the general public who wish to learn more about Catalyst Fund membership or the Foundation may call (860) 229-6018 or visit www.cfgnb.org.
