Area Students Awarded More than $64,000 in Scholarships

(July 17, 2007) The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has awarded a total of $64,540 in scholarships to 29 students from Berlin, Farmington, New Britain, Plainville and Southington, helping to provide the means by which they may pursue higher education in a diverse variety of fields ranging from nursing to music education to criminal justice.

The students received scholarship awards from 25 of the Foundation’s 31 named scholarship funds and plan to attend colleges and universities both locally and nationally, including Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), the University of Connecticut (UConn), Boston University, Ithaca College and Baylor University, among others. A total of 33 scholarships were awarded, with four students receiving two scholarships.

Among the recipients are Maria Ferenc and Iwona Grochowski, who each received the Virginia and William Bray Scholarship for employees of the Jerome Home in New Britain pursuing higher education. Maria is studying nursing at Capital Community College, while Iwona is studying physical therapy at Naugatuck Valley Community College.

Scholarship recipients are listed in alphabetical order by town of residence. Listings include student name, scholarship awarded, college/university and chosen field of study. Unless otherwise noted, all students are recent graduates of either Berlin High School, Farmington High School, New Britain High School, Plainville High School or Southington High School.
