Dickman, Ronald and Alice Gilrain, Andrews-Hicks Memorial, Ted and Nancy Johnson, Joseph A. Mlynarski, M.D., Memorial, and Robert A. and Phyllis T. Mugford Funds to train volunteers for the Center’s Families in Transition program, a parenting education and mediation program serving low-income families involved with high-conflict custody and visitation court cases

To pilot intensive parent training of children ages 4 and 5 who have been referred to CMHA due to severe behavioral problems, or suspension or expulsion from pre-school or kindergarten

From the Frances P. Parker, Anna Thornton, Alix W. Stanley Discretionary and Anonymous Funds to attract a wider and broader audience, thereby increasing ticket revenue and donations

Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington, $25,000
From the First Years First Fund to support start-up of a Family Resource Center in Southington. The Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington brings parents, educators, community stakeholders and others together to ensure that all Southington children enter school ready to learn.

From the Alix W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for operating support, as designated by 2008 Celebrate New Britain! award honoree

Greater New Britain Arts Alliance, $13,000
For operating support aimed at strengthening the Alliance and enhancing its usefulness and support to artists and arts organizations

Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut, $60,000
From the First Years First Fund to support start-up of the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Initiative. The initiative is being developed at the urging of the Foundation, which views emergent and family literacy as critical ingredients in school success, a primary goal of First Years First. The initiative will enable Literacy Volunteers to expand and improve its existing family literacy program to serve low-literate families in New Britain, Plainville, Berlin and Southington, and devise solutions to address how low-literacy rates among parents impacts their children. The project totals $75,000, with an additional $15,000 from the Christine E. Moser Foundation. Both grants are renewable for up to three years based on program results.

Local Initiatives Support Corporation, $7,500
For second-year support of the Children’s Investment Partnership. CIP provides assistance and training to early childhood centers on how to renovate and construct their centers in order to expand the supply and improve the quality of early care and education for low-income families

Main Street Singers, $2,000
To support the start-up of a junior choir for 3rd- and 4th-graders

Margaret C. Griffin Child Development Center, $2,500
From the Alix W. Stanley Discretionary Fund for program support, as designated by 2008 Celebrate Southington! award honoree

Municipal Economic Development Agency (New Britain), $15,000
To develop an economic development website for the City of New Britain featuring economic development tools and information that will promote business in New Britain

From the First Years First Fund for operating support

From the Alix W. Stanley Discretionary and Johnstone Vance Memorial Funds, to support start-up costs associated with a new food pantry at the Osgood Pool House that will be known as the New Britain Food and Resource Center

New Britain Museum of American Art, up to $60,000
From the Alix W. Stanley Discretionary Fund and Talcott Stanley Fund for support of the Museum’s Education and Outreach program, which provides accessible, high-quality arts education programming for visitors of all ages, particularly school children from Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington

New Britain Public Library/Jefferson Family Resource Center, $12,000
From the First Years First Fund for the “Raise a Reader” program, aimed at improving literacy skills among hard-to-reach New Britain families with children under age 5

Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) of New Britain, $30,000
From the Alix W. Stanley Discretionary and Jeanette Elizabeth Westlake Memorial Funds to support the Center’s efforts to assume management of Bicycling Enthusiasms, a program that trains youth in advanced bicycle repair. The Center’s goal is to transform Bicycling Enthusiasms into a per-vocational program with defined outcomes

From the Howland Rogers Family, Alix W. Stanley Discretionary and William E. Attwood, Jr. Funds to support the New Britain Internship Program, a collaborative high school employment initiative among OIC, New Britain High School and the New Britain Chamber of Commerce

For support of Trinity-On-Main’s executive director position in order to continue the progress and efforts made to create a regional cultural and performing arts center in Downtown New Britain

From the First Years First Fund for Year 3 support of the Early Childhood Professional Educators Consortium. The Consortium is a key component of First Years First, the Foundation’s five-year, $1 million commitment to improving early childhood development outcomes and opportunities for children and families in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington
