2012 Grants and Initiatives

Discretionary and Field of Interest Grants

First Years First

We believe that preparing the children of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington for success in school and in life by enhancing their early childhood development education experience is fundamental to any meaningful expression of the Foundation's mission.

Coalition to Enhance Family Literacy, up to $96,180
From the First Years First Fund to encourage and increase family literacy in New Britain, Plainville and Southington through the use of 21st century technology ($81,180), and for a study to test the effectiveness of utilizing this type of technology to improve and increase family literacy ($15,000).

Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington, $20,000
From the First Years First Fund to support year five of the Family Resource Center in Southington, which enhances early child care and education from birth to age 8, focusing on kindergarten transition and professional development.

Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut, $25,722
From the First Years First Fund to support the Central Connecticut Family Literacy Initiative, which provides high-quality family literacy programming for low literate parents so they can support their children's success in school, make progress toward their goals and improve family self-sufficiency.

New Britain Early Childhood Collaborative, $45,000
From the First Years First Fund for 2012 support of this initiative aimed at improving the lives of New Britain’s young children, birth through third grade.

Arts, Culture and Heritage

We believe that when the Foundation supports arts, culture and heritage programs, we not only enhance the quality of life for all residents in those communities, but also invest in the long-term economic vitality and well-being of the Greater New Britain area.

Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, $24,000
From the Francis P. Parker, Charles L. Munford, Jr. Memorial and A.W. Stanley Discretionary Funds, a capacity building grant for year two support of a collaboration between the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra (CVCO) and the New Britain Symphony Orchestra (NBSO).

Hole in the Wall Theater, $13,000
From the A.W. Stanley Discretionary and Talcott Stanley Funds, a capacity building grant for organizational planning and consulting aimed at increasing fundraising, revenue and organizational marketing.

New Britain Museum of American Art, $50,000
From the Alix W. Stanley Charitable and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Funds to support the Museum’s Education and Outreach Program which provides accessible, quality arts education programs for visitors of all ages.

New Britain Youth Theater, $10,750
From the Justus S. and Lillian F. Beach, Vic and Jane Darnell, Walter H. Dickman, A. W. Stanley Discretionary, Andrews-Hicks Memorial and Anna Thornton Funds to support the NBYT Teen Company for 13- to 18-year-olds from Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.

Queen Ann Nzinga Center, $30,000
From the William T. Livingston Memorial, J. Edward and Justine B. Melson and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Funds to support QANC’s second year in residence at Trinity on Main in New Britain and continue its efforts to provide arts programming that has a positive impact on New Britain youth and downtown.

CFGNB Community Initiatives Committee, $76,000
From the A. W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to (1) conduct research on the state of the arts in New Britain ($6,000) and (2) for continued exploration of a possible arts initiative and implementation of three arts-related projects in 2013 ($70,000).

Education

We believe in the saying that "knowledge is power." When the Foundation invests in education, it is helping to provide citizens with a key that can help open many doors.

Children's Law Center, $7,500
From the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund to support the New Britain Truancy Intervention project, a pro-bono, pre-court diversion program pairing attorney volunteers with truant middle school students.

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, 
$13,000
From the Louis G. and Ada C. Amodio Fund for Children and the A.W. Stanley Discretionary and Jeannette Elizabeth Westlake Memorial Funds to support the second year of the Smalley Academy, aimed at reducing summer learning loss among 4th and 5th graders.

Health and Human Services

We believe that having access to services that help maintain or improve health, or which help citizens gain access to basic human services, is fundamental to quality of life.

Central Connecticut Senior Health Services, $10,000
From the Ev and Ethel Herre, Georgia Knapp Thomson and Johnstone Vance Memorial Funds to pilot an intergenerational learning partnership with Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) that will bring together college students and older adults living in Greater New Britain.

Congregational Church of Plainville, $10,000
From the Anna T. Deutsch and A.W. Stanley Discretionary Funds to provide the last dollars needed for the church to rebuild and equip Food for Friends, a program that provides a hot meal to those in need in Plainville.

Connecticut Association for Human Services, 
$10,000
From the Helen M. Lynch and Johnstone Vance Memorial Funds for third-year support of Earn Benefits, an online benefits screening initiative to improve access to work supports by low-wage benefits.

Connecticut Voices for Children, $6,672
From the Donald W. and Virginia C. Davis, Ted and Nancy Johnson, and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Funds to enable Voices to provide local data and research that is currently unavailable.

Farrell Treatment Center, $15,000
From the Elizabeth J. Berry, Con-Fed Charitable, William H. Judd, Jr., Joseph A. Mlynarski, MD Memorial, Robert A. and Phyllis T. Mugford, Howland Rogers Family, Georgia Knapp Thomson, Marjorie Wright Tomlinson, and Spencer P. Torell Funds to develop an organizational strategic and fundraising plan.

Foodshare, $50,000
From the A.W. Stanley Discretionary Fund to provide direct support for food and supplies to 22 food pantries and shelters in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.

Hoops for the Homeless, $10,000
From the Johnstone Vance Memorial and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Funds for one-time start-up costs associated with an annual event that will raise awareness and generate funding for organizations that provide services to homeless children and families.

Hospital for Special Care, $25,000
From the Weld Fund for Capital Needs and the A.W. Stanley Discretionary Funds, a challenge grant to support the “Hope” capital campaign. The grant will be paid upon confirmation that fundraising goals for both the medical staff and employees have reached 75 percent of the $200,000 goal for each.

House of Heroes, $13,500
From the Catalyst and A. W. Stanley Discretionary Funds to provide no-cost home improvements that will help veterans from Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington maintain a safe, secure and accessible home.

Southington Public Schools Special Education Transition Program, $16,333
From the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund to purchase a van needed for the Special Education Transition Program for ages 18-21 which teaches participants the skills they need to be independent adults able to function at their greatest potential in their home, at work and in the community.

Wheeler Regional YMCA, Plainville, $10,000
From the Johnstone Vance Memorial Fund to support the second year of "Livestrong," an exercise program for cancer survivors aimed at helping them regain strength and endurance following treatment.
