Literacy Volunteers Of Central Connecticut Fund

Founded in 1978, Literacy Volunteers of Central CT’s mission is “Volunteers helping people improve their lives through English literacy”. Serving over 400 people per year with the help of over 200 dedicated volunteers; adults receive instruction and encouragement to improve their skills in reading, writing, or speaking English in order to achieve their work, family, and community goals. In addition our family literacy programs help parents to gain literacy skills to support their children’s success in school and to improve the financial sustainability of their families. Our affiliations include the national organization, Proliteracy and the National Center for Family Learning.
Our Story
Adults in New Britain, Plainville, Southington, and Berlin benefit from specific programs such as citizenship tutoring, Parenting for Academic Success classes, tutoring to help get into a GED program or to read a story to their child, and classes to advance their English skills for work. 56% of adults in New Britain are at the lowest levels of literacy.
