Raising Readers Parent Club open to Southington parents

(March 9, 2009) – There’s a new “club” in town that’s open to all Southington parents with children in preschool though second grade. Raising Readers Parent Club is a free, eight-week program with just one requirement for membership: an interest in helping your child be a better reader and student. Designed to be fun and interactive, the club was designed especially for parents who never enjoyed reading themselves.

Raising Readers will give parents strategies and activities to make reading with their children both enjoyable and beneficial. Free, new books will be provided, along with educational materials and supplies, tips for fun home activities, and an opportunity for group discussion about literacy-related topics. The program is offered by the Southington Family Resource Center, which is part of the Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington. Operating with a $25,000 grant from the First Years First Fund, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain’s early childhood development initiative, the Collaborative brings parents, educators, community stakeholders and others together to ensure that all Southington children enter school ready to learn.

Raising Readers will meet Thursdays, March 26 through May 21, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Thalberg School, 145 Dunham Road. Class will not be held on April 16th. Register by March 20th by calling the Southington Family Resource Center at 628-3286, ext. 380.
