Celebrate Berlin! Award Selection Committee Chair Named
(February 3, 2008) – Robert Mayer, Managing Editor of The Berlin, Southington and Plainville Citizen newspapers, has agreed to co-chair the selection committee for this year’s Community Foundation of Greater New Britain Celebrate Berlin! award, part of the Foundation’s four-town Celebrate Our Communities! community service awards program in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington.
Mayer is a lifelong Berlin resident and an active community volunteer. A member of the Berlin Lions Club and associate director for the Berlin Chamber of Commerce, Mayer is also a corporator with the Hospital of Central Connecticut, a youth coach in soccer and softball, and a room parent for his two daughters. He is the tournament director of the William Scalise-William Mayer Berlin VFW annual golf tournament, which benefits the Berlin VFW, local scholarships and the Hospital of Central Connecticut dialysis department.
He will lead a group of business and community leaders in reviewing this year’s nominations for the outstanding grassroots volunteer in Berlin. The Celebrate Berlin! award recipient will earn the right to designate a $2,500 grant award from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain to a Berlin charity or community service organization of their choice. The Community Foundation has earmarked a total of $10,000 in grant awards for the program in its four communities.
