Community Foundation Scholarships are Available Now. It’s Never Too Early To Apply.
(February 20, 2010) - The only thing more stressful than waiting for that college acceptance letter is finding a way to pay for college. The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain is fortunate to have numerous scholarships available to graduating seniors from high schools in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington as well as select scholarships for students in Farmington, Newington and Wethersfield. There are also various scholarships for students already enrolled in a program of higher education.
Community Foundation scholarships are established by donors who determine the criteria for eligibility and selection. In 2009 the Community Foundation granted 51 scholarships totaling $97,760. This year the Foundation expects to surpass last years’ scholarship grant total and award 58 scholarships totaling approximately $130,000 due in part to several new scholarships established this year.
Carol R. Virostek, Ph.D., Chair of the Community Foundation Scholarship Committee is looking forward to this year’s scholarship process. “I am so impressed each year by the increasing number of stellar applicants, wonderful young people who are so deserving of these awards. In these difficult financial times, we, along with the students and their families, are so grateful to our generous donors. The selection process is always a challenge because despite the impressive array of scholarships we currently offer, we always wish we had more."
Students should speak with their Guidance Counselor and are encouraged to visit the Community Foundation’s website where they may browse the full scholarship list. Students may also contact Cheryl Farmer, Scholarship Manager at the Community Foundation at 860-229-6018 ext. 305.
