Overview & History
Our Foundation
The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain connects donors who care with causes that matter in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. An independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1941, the Foundation currently invests and administers more than 140 funds with a market value of more than $30 million. We annually distribute approximately $1 million in grants to humanitarian, educational and cultural organizations to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family.
A 501(c)(3) public charity, the Foundation is one of the first community foundations in the country to comply with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations.
About Community Foundations
Community foundations constitute one of the
fastest growing sectors of philanthropy in the country and are the backbone of strong, vibrant, viable communities across the land. There are nearly 700 community foundations in the United States, more than 490 of which are members of the Council on Foundations. In an age when making the right philanthropic choices can be complex and sometimes overwhelming, community foundations inspire confidence and comfort, possess intimate understanding of community needs, provide easily understood charitable options, and offer an approachability that is rare in today’s hectic world.
